The area includes the waterfront of Philadelphia, and the neighborhood has close ties to the industries that developed along the Delaware River. There are also many residential homes and apartments in the area.
Considered one of the oldest areas of the city, it was long a working class neighborhood that became famous as the home to many of the Mummer clubs that hold a parade at the beginning of each year. A museum in the area attests to the long legacy of these clubs.
